Angels vs NERV — the 1997 Evangelion strategy game

This is the turn-based strategy game from Neon Genesis Evangelion Collector's Disc Vol. 3, published in Japan in 1997 and never released outside it. It shipped as a protected Macromedia Director movie; the unit statistics, weapon tables, damage formula and computer opponents were recovered by decompiling that movie's Lingo bytecode, and rebuilt here to run in a browser with no plugin, no download and no server.

How to play

Choose a side at the title screen: the Angels, or NERV. Each side can be played by a person or by one of the three MAGI supercomputers — Melchior, Balthasar or Casper. Units arrive from reserve on a fixed schedule, so the game is paced by who shows up when.

Deploy a unit with UNIT and place it on your back row. Move with MOVE, up to the unit's speed in squares. Attack with ATTACK, using whichever weapon you select from the panel; range and remaining ammunition are listed beside each one. A unit that moves may still attack, but attacking ends its turn. TURN END passes play to the other side.

Units

All thirty-two units from the original are here: the Angels Sachiel, Shamshel, Ramiel, Gaghiel, Israfel, Sandalphon, Matarael, Sahaquiel, Ireul, Leliel, Zeruel, Arael, Armisael and Tabris, against Evangelion Units 00, 01, 02 and 03, Jet Alone, the UN heavy VTOLs and battle craft, and Pen Pen. Israfel splits in two when badly hurt, Tabris converts what it touches, and on turn nineteen Evangelion Unit 01 goes berserk and gains a bite that drains what it damages.
